Poetry evenings at Inkwell
Transforming with Poetry started in September 2013 as an attempt to give a performative and more physical life to Poesía Indignada, a well-known digital international publication of poetry in Spanish and English run by Leeds activist Tony Martin-Woods. Transforming with Poetry takes place on the 2nd Saturday of every month at 8pm.
There are great poetry events happening in Leeds, but until the creation of Transforming with Poetry at Inkwell nobody was offering a poetry night with the explicit commitment of taking poetry into the battle ground of sustainability and social justice, beyond the sometimes narrow boundaries of art for the sake of itself. In September 2014, Transforming with Poetry joined the global network of poetry 100 Thousand Poets for Change.
Some of the work of Transforming with Poetry poets such as Jonathan Eyre, Jimmy Andrex, Terry Bradford and Tony Martin-Woods has been published in Poesía Indignada and, conversely, poetry by Poesía Indignada contributors from the Spanish speaking world, including several award winning poets, is regularly performed in Spanish and English in Transforming with Poetry events at Inkwell, Leeds, which tend to be broadcasted live for the rest of the world through the Inkwell´s live event feed in Bambooser and stored in Inkwell´s channel.
Poets who perform regularly at Inkwell´s Transforming with Poetry also include Siobhan Mac Mahon, Hannah Stone and Theo Ellinas and some of their performances and work can be seen in our open Facebook page.
Diversity is another feature of Inkwell, as other well-known poets such as Rob Miles or Pitman Poet from Mexborough and group performers such as WAST (Women Asylum Seekers Together) and poetry translator Lizzie Lowenstein have made memorable contributions to Transforming with Poetry.
Spoken Word and music are also an important ingredient of these poetic events. Stan Skinny, Mike O’Brien, Eddie Lawlor, Pete and Freddy Denton, Rafaele Ruocco, Ana Luisa Muñoz and Mike Holland from Flamenco Diez, Dave Hall and Len Forbes from the Blacksocks and Chris Harrington, amongst others, have featured in Transforming with Poetry.
